Shingle roofs are composed of roof shingles, which are a roof covering consisting of individual overlapping elements. These elements are typically flat, rectangular shapes laid in courses from the bottom edge of the roof up, with each successive course overlapping the joints below. Singles are made of various materials such as wood, slate, flagstone, fiber cement, metal, plastic, and composite material such as asphalt shingles.
The most common shingle used on residential and commercial buildings is a Standard 3-Tab fiberglass asphalt shingle, which can last up to 20 to 30 years. Another type of asphalt shingle, a dimensional shingle, can last from 30 – 50 years, and typically look more high grade and expensive. Some manufactures even give a lifetime warranty on dimensional shingles.
Shingle Roof Leaks / Repair
Roof leaks in shingle roofs usually occur when a nail has come loose and has fallen out of its hole, or when a nail has lifted up and water is running through the nail’s hole.
Roof leaks also may occur from a deteriorated area of the shingles. If this is the case, the existing shingles can be removed from the roof area, and then new shingles can be installed to area. Another option is to install new shingles over the existing shingles, although this is less cost effective.
